Warning: I tracked every 'weird coincidence' for 90 days and now I can't unsee the pattern
Back in March I got laid off from my job at a logistics company in Dayton, and over the next 12 weeks I kept noticing the same three topics pop up over and over in unrelated places: my aunt mentioned microchips in a voicemail, a cashier at Kroger said it, and then a podcast I'd never heard of did an hour on it. Being a bored person with a spreadsheet, I started logging every time a topic showed up from two or more people who didn't know each other, and I ended up with 47 entries by June 1. Here's the part that messed with me: the big ones weren't the opposite of what I believed, they lined up with stuff I already half thought was true, which made them way more seductive. I also noticed that every single time I looked up who started the claim, it traced back to either one anonymous post or one person selling something. So now I have this dumb question I can't shake: when you notice the same idea coming at you from unrelated directions, do you treat that as proof of something, or as proof of a push? And what do you actually do to tell the difference?
