That time at PAX East changed how I approach indie games

I skipped a AAA demo to try some no-name booth game about a raccoon fixing a spaceship, and I seriously had more fun there than the whole rest of the show. Has anyone else found better games by ignoring the big publisher halls?

My buddy Ray actually had this happen to him at PAX South a few years back. He spent like two hours in a corner booth playing a game about a goose that runs a detective agency, and the dev was just sitting there on a folding chair watching him. Ray said the goose game had this weird charm where you solved mysteries by stealing things and using them as clues, and he ended up talking with the dev for another hour after finishing the demo. Meanwhile his whole group was off waiting in line for some big shooter game and they only got to play for like ten minutes before the floor closed. He still brings that goose game up at least once a year whenever someone mentions PAX. I guess sometimes the best stuff is hidden in the spots nobody bothers to check.

Oh man, that goose game sounds incredible. My buddy Dave had a similar thing happen at some tiny indie showcase where he found this game about a raccoon running a food truck. He was the only one playing it for like 45 minutes and the dev gave him a free t-shirt after. He still talks about it way more than any triple A game he's played since.
