Is a gaming chair actually worth it or are we all just buying hype?

I spent $350 on a fancy racing style chair 2 years ago and my back still hurts after long sessions. My buddy uses a $40 office chair from a garage sale and swears he can play 8 hours fine. I keep seeing streamers push these expensive chairs and I wonder if we're all just falling for marketing. The lumbar support on mine feels like a brick. Do ergonomic office chairs beat gaming chairs for real, or do I just have a bad one? Anyone else feel the same way?
