Went 2 inches wetter on a driveway pour last month and it bought me 40 extra minutes
Foreman always mixed stiff for flatwork. Last month in Tucson we poured a 30 by 24 driveway and I dumped in about 2 extra gallons per yard. Guy on the crew gave me a look like I was watering down the mud. But the screed just glided and we got the whole slab floated with time to spare. Normally we are racing the set and scrambling on the edges. What I figured out is a wetter mix is not a mistake if you know how to work it. Has anyone else changed their slump on purpose for flatwork, or do you stick with what the boss says?

We did the same thing on a big shop floor last summer. Boss was out of town and the mix came in dry, so we added water at the truck and it saved us. The guys fighting the screed all morning got a break and we finished the pours without anyone standing around waiting on set. People act like adding water is always wrong but a lot of it comes down to the mix design and how hot it is. In Tucson heat that 40 minutes matters more than a slightly lower strength that you will never notice on a driveway anyway.
