Switched from a wood float to a magnesium float in 2019 and it changed how I finish slabs
I used to do everything with a wood float, that was just how the old guys on my crew in Fresno showed me back in 2011. Wood floats are cheap and they work, but you have to wait longer for the bleed water to dry up before you can even touch it. About 6 years back a guy named Ray on a job in Clovis handed me a mag float and told me to just try it. The difference in how fast I could get on the slab was nuts, I was finishing about 20 minutes sooner on a 30 by 40 pour. The mag float opens the surface up without pulling up extra water like a wood float does. Now I keep two mag floats on the truck and the wood one only comes out for really soft mixes. Anyone else make the switch and never look back, or do you still keep a wood float around for certain jobs?
