Question about floating too early, a guy in Tulsa pointed out my timing was off by 45 minutes
I was finishing a 20 by 30 driveway slab last week and floating it as soon as the bleed water showed up, like I always have. The guy helping me that day watched me for a bit and said I was working it way too soon, that waiting 45 more minutes would give me a harder surface to work. I tried it on the next pour and the finish came out way smoother with almost no tearing at the edges. Turns out I had been rushing the whole float stage for a long time and just blamed the mix for rough spots. It also cut my trowel passes down because the cream wasn't so sloppy. What signs do you all watch for to know it's really ready to float, or do you just go by feel and time?
