I was a diehard Macrium Reflect user for 5 years, just switched to Clonezilla and I get it now
Always thought Macrium's GUI was worth the $70 a year for the business license. But last Tuesday I had to clone a failing drive on an old Dell Optiplex 7010 and Macrium kept erroring out halfway through. Tried Clonezilla with a bootable USB I made in 5 minutes. It worked first try, no BS. Yeah the interface is ugly terminal stuff and you gotta know your sda from sdb. But it's free, it's fast, and it didn't add any weird partitions. Plus the incremental backups are way more reliable than Macrium's for my shop. Has anyone else found a free tool that just works better than the paid stuff for certain jobs?

convinced me too honestly. i used to think paying for software meant it was just better and more reliable. but after dealing with macrium choking on a simple 500gb drive clone on a crusty old lenovo, i finally gave clonezilla a shot. the whole terminal thing is intimidating at first but once you do it once you realize it's just knowing your drives. plus not having to worry about licensing or subscriptions is a huge weight off.

Man I hear you both but I gotta be the guy who asks is it really that deep though? Like yeah Clonezilla definitely has its place and it's great for rough hardware. But I've been running Macrium on a few different machines here for years and honestly the only times I ever got errors were when the drive was actually failing anyway. Plus most of my clients are not technical people at all so when they need to do a restore themselves the terminal thing is a nonstarter. I still keep a Clonezilla USB in my bag for emergencies but I wouldn't call it a full on replacement or anything.
