Dropped $220 on a thermal camera for diag work, half the techs I know call it a toy
Honestly I grabbed a basic thermal cam about 8 months ago for $220 and it has paid for itself maybe 3 times over on board-level stuff alone. Last month I had a laptop that would boot then die after 90 seconds, and the cam showed one mosfet hitting 110C while everything else sat cool, reflowed it and the thing has been running fine since. But I get the other side too, one of the guys at the shop in Reno says he has done this 15 years with a finger test and a can of freeze spray and never needed one. Ngl I think it depends on whether you actually do component level repair or you are just swapping parts all day. Tbh half the time I still reach for my meter first because it is faster. So where do you all land, is the thermal cam a real tool or just a $220 gadget that makes me feel fancy?
