Burned $180 on a 'refurb' dock and a fake SSD off a marketplace listing in Denver
Saw a listing for a Lenovo dock plus a 1TB Samsung drive for $180 and the guy said it was 'barely used, pulled from a lease return.' Met him in a King Soopers lot off Colorado Blvd, handed over cash, and he was gone before I even opened the box. Got back to the bench and the dock worked for about 20 minutes then started dropping the display, and the SSD showed up in CrystalDiskInfo as a no name drive with 40,000 hours on it. Opened the dock and found rust on the board plus a fan caked in what I really hope was dust. What's your go to test before you hand over cash to a random seller, or do you just refuse marketplace parts outright now?
Man that stings, getting burned on a meetup like that is the worst because you know the second that cash leaves your hand you're never seeing the guy again. Honestly the only thing I do anymore is make them stand there while I plug the drive into my laptop and check the hours in CrystalDiskInfo, and if they won't wait two minutes I just walk. For docks I'd at least ask for a video of it running before we meet, otherwise I'm not touching a cash deal on marketplace parts.
