Coffee shop chat about VLAN tagging stuck with me all week
I was waiting out a thunderstorm at a cafe near Albany last Tuesday, and this older guy who runs a three location bookstore chain starts explaining how he finally stopped fighting his managed switches and just let the vendor's default VLAN setup do its thing. He said something like "I spent 40 hours mapping ports that never needed mapping," and it hit me that I do the same thing with our office network, overthinking segmentation that barely has 20 devices. Has anyone else realized they were overcomplicating a small network just because the gear could do more than they needed?

Does your gear actually need all those VLANs to keep the lights on? We ran three separate segments at my last job for "security" and nobody ever crossed them anyway. Most small offices are fine with one flat network and a guest wifi, save yourself the headache.
