TIL a cracked o-ring from poor storage can sink your dive day

I almost had a bad situation because I stored my rig in a hot shed over the winter. The heat made a small o-ring in my regulator dry out and crack. Didn't notice until I was doing my pre-dive check, and it failed the pressure test. That tiny piece could have meant a free-flow at depth. Now I keep spares in a cool, dark place and check them more often. It's a simple thing that gets overlooked. Just a heads-up to give your seals a good look before you suit up.

Yikes, I always figured those little rings were tough enough to handle anything. Reading how heat can actually dry and crack them changes my mind completely. Guess even the small parts need the right care.

Ugh, I feel you @hernandez.ben. It's wild how something like leaving a ring near a heater (or even on a sunny windowsill) can do that kind of damage over time. You just don't expect the tiny, sturdy-seeming stuff to need that kind of watchful eye.

Have you ever considered that rings might be tougher than this? I get the concern, but it sounds like overkill. If a ring falls apart from a little sunlight, it was likely cheap to begin with. Good materials should hold up under normal conditions without constant worry. People treat everyday items like they're made of glass now. Just wear your ring and live your life.

Actually, I learned the hard way when my favorite ring got all brittle from sitting in the car. What worked for me was keeping it in a little cloth pouch away from direct heat, like @stella_flores17 mentioned with the windowsill. Now it stays in good shape, so that care really does matter.

Small parts, big problems. Quinn said good rings should hold up without worry, but that's risky for diving gear. O-rings dry out from heat, even good ones. A broken seal underwater can be deadly. Keeping them cool and dark isn't overkill, it's smart. Ignoring it because they seem strong is how bad things happen.
