Had a chat with my old dive supervisor Pete in Port Fourchon last month
We were talking about the old days of hard hat diving and he mentioned something that stuck with me. He said we lost something when we switched fully to those lightweight Kirby Morgan band masks, not just the weight but the feel of a solid hat protecting you down there. He pulled out this beat up MK V injector from his truck and said 'this thing saved my life three times, do you trust that plastic mask the same way?' It hit me different because I remember the shift happening around 2007 or so and never really thought about it like that until now. Has anyone else ever felt that way about the gear evolution, or am I just getting old?

Oh man, I gotta respectfully disagree. I mean, that MK V feels solid and all, but my band mask is way more comfortable and I can actually hear what's going on around me, which feels like a bigger safety thing to me.

Does your band mask filter out smoke and gas as well as the MK V though?
