A deckhand told me I was "fighting the hose like it owed me money" so I changed one habit
Was working a pier job in San Diego last month and every time I'd turn, my umbilical would snag on the same chunk of broken concrete. The deckhand watched me yank it free for the third time and just said "you're fighting the hose like it owed you money, just feed it before you turn." Never really thought about leading the hose before, I just reacted to it. Started feeding slack ahead of my turns and my air flow got so much smoother I could actually hear myself think down there. Any of you guys got a go-to trick for keeping your umbilical from snagging on structure?
That broken concrete chunk on a pier in San Diego is what gets me. You said you snagged on the SAME spot three times and just kept yanking? I would've lost my mind by round two. I get that reacting is automatic when you're in the water and focused on the job, but watching a deckhand clock your habit from the surface like that is wild. Then one tip about feeding slack and suddenly you can hear yourself think? That's a huge change from one small move. I'm still stuck on the fact that nobody told you sooner.
