The difference in my 90s X-Men collection after cleaning with white erasers

Got back into collecting last winter and dug out my old Uncanny X-Men run from a mildew box in my parents' garage. Spent a weekend carefully erasing the cover scuffs and spine wear with a white vinyl eraser, about 60 issues total. It's wild how much brighter those 1991 Jim Lee covers look compared to the untouched ones for the same months. Anyone else try the eraser trick and see a huge before and after on older books, or is it risky for the gloss if you press too hard?
