I was a variant cover snob until my LCS owner in Fresno called me out
I used to skip any book that didn't have a ratio variant or a foil cover, and I thought that made me a serious collector. Last month the owner of my shop in Fresno watched me pass on a stack of regular covers and asked me point blank, "Do you even read them or just slab them?" I went home and counted 214 books in my long boxes, and I couldn't tell him the plot of a single one from the past year. Now I buy whatever printing is on the shelf and actually crack them open the same night. How many of you actually read the books you buy versus just chasing the shiny covers?
