I trashed variant covers for years until a guy at my shop in Portland called me out
I used to post all the time that variant covers were a scam and real fans just want good stories. Last month a guy at my local shop in Portland asked me which books I actually pull and I listed nine, and every one had a variant I picked up. He said if the art gets people into the store that is a sale, not a scam, which is a fair point I did not want to hear. I went back and looked at my shelf and counted 23 variants I bought this year, so I admitted it in the group. Now I am curious, do you count your variants as part of your collection or keep them separate from your main run?
Honestly variant covers still feel like a scam to me even after your story. Twenty three in one year is not collecting, that is just the shop training you to buy the same book twice. Tbh if the story is good you would buy it either way, so the art is just an upsell.
