Unpopular opinion: my old drip machine made better coffee than my pour over setup, and it took a dead grinder to admit it
For about two years I woke up at 5:40 every morning to bloom, swirl, and time a 3 minute pour over like it was a science fair project. Then my burr grinder died last month and I had to drag the old drip machine out of the garage just to get through the week. I ground beans at the store, dumped them in, hit start, and walked away. The cup was smoother than anything I'd made by hand, and I sat there on the porch feeling a little cheated. Turns out my fancy grinder was set way too fine and I'd been drinking muddy coffee for 18 months without knowing. I've left the drip machine on the counter ever since, and my $40 kettle is now a plant stand. Has anyone else gone backwards on gear and ended up happier with what they got?
