Pro tip: skip the gooseneck kettle and use a cheap drip machine for light roasts
Everyone in this hobby told me pour over was the only way to get a good cup from a light roast, so I spent $120 on a gooseneck kettle and a V60 last spring. After three weeks of sour, weak cups I got frustrated and dumped the same beans into my $25 Mr. Coffee on a whim, and it honestly tasted better, sweeter and more balanced. I learned that my tap water here in Boise runs about 180F out of the kettle and I was never hitting the temp I needed, while the drip machine holds steady at 195F. I still use the V60 on weekends, but I stopped believing the gear is what makes the cup. Has anyone else found their cheap machine beating their fancy setup on certain beans?
