My buddy Mike spent 8 years machining before he figured out his roughing pass was the issue. He was doing climb milling on a machine that needed conventional milling. His tools kept chipping and he thought it was just cheap carbide. Finally someone from the tooling supplier watched him run a part and pointed it out in like 30 seconds. He said the silence in the shop was deafening while he stood there processing it. We still give him crap about it every time he orders new end mills.

Ask him if he ever checked his tool runout after that or just assumed it was fine... I always wonder how many of us are making one little mistake like that for years and just never catch it. @the_val had a good point about the tooling supplier catching it fast, but what about the guys who never get a second set of eyes on their work... That has to be happening all the time, right?
