My shop switched from bar pullers to a collet chuck on the lathe and cut cycle time by 40%
Last Tuesday we ran a batch of 500 small aluminum spacers and the bar puller kept slipping on the stock, so every 8 or 9 parts someone had to stop and reset it. Our lead grabbed the 5C collet chuck off the shelf and swapped it in, and suddenly we were running lights out with no babysitting at all. The collet held about .0005 TIR compared to the puller's sloppy .003 or worse. Cycle time dropped from 2:10 to 1:15 per part, that's not a typo. Anyone else ditch bar pullers for collets on small diameter work or is that just us?
