My old shop's tool crib went from a 20 minute hunt to a 30 second grab, and all it took was one label maker
Two years back I worked at a job shop off Industrial Drive where the end mill drawer was a total mess. You'd dig for a 1/2 inch carbide for 20 minutes while the machine sat there eating spindle time. Then our lead guy bought a $40 label maker and some foam, and we started shadowing every tool in the drawer. Within a month the average grab time dropped to about 30 seconds, and we quit buying duplicates because we could actually see what we had. Last week I visited the old place and the drawer still looks like a grid of little cutouts. Anyone here tried shadow boards for drills and taps too, or is that only worth it for the pricey stuff?
Man, my buddy ran a maintenance shop at a dairy plant and did the same thing with his drills and taps. He cut the foam so each bit sat in its own slot with the size sharpied on the foam, and even the little oddball taps nobody touched got a home. Took him a whole weekend but he said he stopped ordering the same 3/8 tap every other month because he could finally see he already had four. For cheap stuff it still paid off just from not double buying, plus the new guys could find a bit without bugging him every ten minutes.
