A guy from New Jersey told me my feeds and speeds were too conservative and he was right after I bumped them up 20% and got a better surface finish.

He just looked at my part on the machine and said 'you're babying it' so I tried his numbers on a test run and the chatter went away completely what's your rule of thumb for dialing in feed rates on aluminum?

Babying it" is exactly what I was doing on my first few aluminum jobs. I started bumping my feed 10% at a time until the chips started coloring up, that's usually my sweet spot now.

You ever had chips come off blue? That's where I take it. Color tells you everything about heat management. If they're silver you're leaving money on the table. But push too hard and you'll get built up edge real quick. I watch the color like a hawk now. Your 10% method is smart, keeps you from wrecking a part.
