Spent $60 on a 4MB RAM upgrade for my old Pentium 2 rig just to run Quake 2 mods, and it was the best money I ever burned
I found a seller on an old forum charging $60 for a 4MB stick of EDO RAM, which sounds insane today but back in the late 90s that was just what it cost if you wanted to run the big total conversion mods. I was trying to play the Chaos Deathmatch mod for Quake 2 and my machine kept choking on the larger maps, stuttering every time a rocket flew across the screen. My dad told me I was wasting my lawn mowing money and that 32MB was already plenty, but I bought it anyway. The install took maybe 5 minutes, and the second I fired up that mod again the whole thing ran smooth as glass, no stutter, no lag, nothing. I kept that same stick in three different builds over the next few years and it never gave me a single problem. Meanwhile my buddy dropped $80 on a fancy new graphics card around the same time and his drivers crashed constantly with the same mods. So here is my question for you all, was that RAM upgrade worth it or did I just get lucky with the timing? I still think RAM was the real bottleneck for 90s mods and not the GPU everyone obsessed over.
Ever notice how the thing everyone obsesses over is never the thing that actually fixes your problem? Like people will drop big money on a shiny new part because it looks impressive, but the boring upgrade nobody talks about is what really makes it run. It's the same with cars and tools, the flashy stuff gets all the attention while the simple fix just quietly works.
