Rant: everyone says use ZDoom for old WADs but a guy at QuakeCon 2019 in Dallas changed my mind
I was at QuakeCon 2019 in Dallas showing off my 1994 Doom map pack and this older modder watched me load it in ZDoom with all the fancy settings on. He said "you're erasing the engine you fell in love with" and made me boot it in plain DOSBox right there. The sound effects hit different, the enemy behavior was off in ways I never noticed, and my whole map felt wrong because I had been tuning it around ZDoom's quirks without knowing. Now I test everything in DOSBox first and port to source ports after. Has anyone else had a mod that only felt right in the original engine?
Had the same thing happen with a Doom 2 map I was tweaking, worked fine in GZDoom but the monsters kept getting stuck in weird ways. Threw it in DOSBox and boom, everything acted how it should. Now I always keep a plain boot setup for testing before I mess with any source port stuff.
