Went to grab a $1.50 hot dog at the Costco food court and the whole register system died mid order
Last Saturday I stopped by the Costco on the west side of town around 12:30, right when the lunch rush hits, and the self-serve kiosks were all frozen with a spinning wheel on the screen. So I got in the regular line, waited about 8 minutes, and right as the guy scanned my card the screen went black and a manager came over and said the whole system was down across every register. We all just stood there staring at each other while people behind me started joking that this was the real test of whether the $1.50 hot dog is worth it. After maybe 10 minutes they just started handing out dogs and drinks for free and said come back and pay later, which honestly nobody did. Does anyone know if this happens a lot at other spots, or did I just hit the one Costco in the country that runs on dial-up?
Did the manager really just let everyone walk out without paying? That's wild but honestly kinda wholesome, like the system crashing forced Costco to just trust people for once. I've heard the food court registers go down here and there but not the whole store at lunch rush, so maybe you just got lucky with free lunch.
