Thermal paste vs. those cheap pad kits, the pad route saved my GPU last Sunday

I swapped a $6 pad kit onto my old RX 580 after the paste dried out and temps dropped 15 degrees, so why does everyone here keep pushing the messy paste method when pads are zero risk and take five minutes total, has anyone else made the switch?

Pads are way easier, worked great on my old card too.
