The $3 thermal pad trick that had me questioning 4 years of paste

I always used thermal paste because every guide said so, but after my laptop hit 95C in July I tried those cheap pink pads from a local shop in Austin. Dropped it to 78C and now I wonder how many fans I killed by being loyal to the tube. Anyone else switch and never look back?
