Dollar store thermal paste gamble paid off after 2 crashes
My old 2012 laptop kept shutting down during summer, so I grabbed a $3 tube of thermal compound from the dollar store instead of the $15 name brand stuff. Slapped it on the CPU after watching a 10 minute video, and it's been running cool for 3 months now with no issues. Anyone else risk the cheap stuff on a machine they don't care much about?

Three months isn't that long for a laptop that old... give it another summer and see if that cheap paste dries up or turns into glue. I'd be more worried about the dollar store tube having weird stuff in it that melts over time. Just saying...

My old Dell had the same issue, cheap paste lasted over a year for me.
