Check your thermal pads before buying a whole new GPU, trust me

I was over at a friend's place in Austin last week, his 2018 RX 580 started hitting 95C and crashing mid-game. He was about to drop $250 on a replacement until I pulled the cooler off and saw the thermal pads had turned to powder. A $12 pad kit from Amazon and some fresh paste from my drawer fixed it in an hour. Anyone else find that old pads fail way faster than the chips themselves?
