A buddy's comment about his $8 garage sale PSU made me question my build budget
Last week my friend Rob showed me his whole PC running on a dusty old power supply he grabbed at a garage sale for $8. I laughed at first, but then he said 'it either works or it doesn't, and if it pops I'm out less than a pizza.' That hit different because I just dropped $110 on a new unit for my own rig after the old one made a weird noise. Now I'm wondering if I overthink this stuff, like is the peace of mind worth the extra cash or am I just feeding the fear? Has anyone else run a sketchy cheap PSU for years without issues?

Look man, Rob's gonna learn the hard way eventually. That $8 PSU is literally a fire hazard wrapped in a metal box, and I'm not about to let my whole setup go up in smoke to save a hundred bucks. I get the whole "it either works or it doesn't" logic, but that's the same thinking people use before their hard drive dies and they lose everything. Peace of mind is real, and I've seen enough fried components on forums to know it's not just fear. You're not overthinking it, you're just the one who actually cares about your gear. And honestly, if your old one made a weird noise, you did the right thing. That's not paranoia, that's called paying attention.
