A buddy's comment about his $8 garage sale PSU made me question my build budget

Last week my friend Rob showed me his whole PC running on a dusty old power supply he grabbed at a garage sale for $8. I laughed at first, but then he said 'it either works or it doesn't, and if it pops I'm out less than a pizza.' That hit different because I just dropped $110 on a new unit for my own rig after the old one made a weird noise. Now I'm wondering if I overthink this stuff, like is the peace of mind worth the extra cash or am I just feeding the fear? Has anyone else run a sketchy cheap PSU for years without issues?

Look man, Rob's gonna learn the hard way eventually. That $8 PSU is literally a fire hazard wrapped in a metal box, and I'm not about to let my whole setup go up in smoke to save a hundred bucks.
