Appreciation post: A client in Phoenix gave me a roll of carpet they bought online, and the backing was way too soft.

I was installing it in a bedroom last week and my knee kicker just tore right through the backing on the first stretch. I had to switch to a power stretcher set on the lightest setting and go super slow. It got me thinking about how you handle materials that aren't up to the usual standard. Has anyone else run into this with certain brands or direct-buy stuff?

Ugh, that backing sounds like tissue paper. Jackson.sarah is right about them cutting corners, and it reminds me of a job where the underpad was so thin it felt like laying carpet over newspaper. You just end up fighting the material all day.

It's wild how much the quality can change from one roll to the next. Makes you wonder if they're cutting corners on the backing to save a few bucks.
