TIL in a tiny shop in Vermont that a 3/4 inch chisel is all you need for 90% of mortise work. Guy there laughed at my full set.

That old guy in the shop is probably right, honestly. It reminds me of my grandpa's toolbox, which was basically just a hammer, a screwdriver, and one perfect, worn down 1/2 inch chisel he used for everything. He built an entire porch with that thing. Makes you wonder about all the fancy gear we buy now, you know? Sometimes the right one tool you know really well beats a whole drawer full of stuff you barely touch.

Honestly, what's the one tool you'd keep if you had to get rid of everything else?

A full set isn't about needing every size, it's about having the right one for the job. The right chisel saves time and gives cleaner results. That old guy is just romanticizing being cheap.
