Those particle board drawers with dovetails still bug me after 20 years

I pulled apart a dresser in a Cleveland basement last month and the joints were clean but the board was crumbling, so why do makers still charge $700 for this when a decent plywood box costs $50 more in material and lasts triple the time, anyone else run into this on site and just rebuild instead of repair?
