PSA: My old method for scribing baseboard was a huge time waster
I used to cut a million little shims and fudge the fit, but after a Reno job last month I started using a contour gauge. It gets a perfect line in one pass now. Anyone have a better tool for weird walls?

Try a profile gauge instead.

My uncle's a finish carpenter and he swears by a homemade scribing block. He just screws a pencil to a small block of wood with a notch cut out. You run it along the wall and it transfers the wonky shape right onto the baseboard. It's basically a free version of a contour gauge and it's crazy how well it works on those old, lumpy plaster walls.

Oh man, I have to disagree on that one. I tried the block and pencil trick once and the pencil point kept wobbling, so my line was all shaky. For me, a cheap plastic profile gauge from the hardware store gives a much cleaner copy of the wall, no guesswork. Have you actually had good luck with the homemade kind?
