Found out a 2x4 is actually 1.5x3.5 and I've been lying to customers for 8 months
So a new guy on my crew asked me why his tape read 3.5 inches on a 2x4 and I laughed at him. Then he pulled up a lumber grading site on his phone and showed me the actual numbers. A 2x4 starts rough at 2 inches by 4 inches but gets planed and dried down to 1.5 by 3.5. Same deal with a 2x6, which is really 1.5 by 5.5. I've been telling homeowners the nominal size for close to a year and never once checked. Now I'm wondering how many other things I say from memory that are just plain wrong. Anybody got a good cheat sheet for nominal vs actual sizes so I don't look dumb again?
