Why does everybody say you have to job hop to get a raise? I stayed 4 years and got a 30 percent bump
I work in IT support in Columbus and for years everyone told me the only way to make more money was to switch companies every 2 years. Last spring I got tired of hearing it, so I sat down with my boss and showed him the 3 tickets I close per hour versus the team average of 1.5, plus the $8,000 in license fees I saved by rewriting our onboarding script. He came back two weeks later with a 30 percent raise and a title change. My buddy did the opposite, jumped to a new place for a 12 percent bump and got laid off 5 months in. So which is it? Is job hopping still the play, or did I just get lucky with a decent manager? I want to hear from people who tried one way and regretted it, because I am honestly not sure I would do it again.
