My old boss changed how I handle rejection last year

I used to take every client "no" really personally. Like it was a reflection of my skills or something. Then my boss at that marketing firm in Austin pulled me aside after I bombed a pitch meeting. She said "you're not selling a coffee mug, you're selling a solution to their problem. If they don't buy, it's usually timing or budget, not you." That stuck with me because she was right. I started tracking why people said no instead of just feeling bad. Now I ask directly what stopped them from saying yes. Has anyone else had a manager drop a simple line that changed your whole mindset about rejections?

That simple reframe changes everything. Tracking the real reason makes it feel like data instead of a personal attack. Most no's are just a mismatch, not a judgment on you. Good on your old boss for saying it that way.

Track the "why" behind every no and you'll stop taking it personal.
