Tried the dryer sheet trick in my Civic and now it smells like a laundromat, but it worked

I parked my 2013 Civic in my buddy's garage in Phoenix for 7 months while I was working out of state and the thing smelled so bad I almost sold it. I threw 3 dryer sheets under the seats and one in the trunk, and after 2 weeks the mold smell was gone and it just smelled like clean laundry. Does anyone know if this actually stops mildew or am I just covering it up until it comes back?
