I put a box fan under my tarp for the winter and the mold came back anyway
Back in 2019 I started storing my 68 Chevelle in a buddy's barn outside Springfield and I figured a cheap tarp plus a box fan would keep the moisture off it. Ran the fan on low all winter, maybe 5 months, and when I pulled the cover off in April the whole roof and trunk lid were spotted with white fuzzy mold. Turns out the fan was just pushing damp barn air around under there instead of letting it breathe, so I yanked the tarp off and bought a real breathable car cover for $130. That next winter the car came out clean, and I also learned to lay a couple of those moisture absorber buckets on the floor pans. I still check them every few weeks now. Anyone else had a cheap fix backfire on them when storing a car long term?
Had a similar deal with a 12 foot aluminum boat I kept flipped over in the yard one winter. I stacked cinder blocks on top to hold it down and shoved a milk crate under each end to let air in. Come spring there was a mouse nest in the bow and the whole hull had that green algae slime. The blocks just trapped water in the low spots and the crates gave the mice a nice ladder. Now I hang it from the rafters in the garage with straps. Mice still get in sometimes but at least it stays dry.
