Heated my freeze dried meal in the bag and it turned into a mess

I tried to save time on a trip to the White Mountains by boiling water and pouring it directly into the pouch of a Mountain House breakfast skillet. The bag seam split after about two minutes and I lost half my food into the pot. Has anyone else had this happen with a specific brand or is it just a bad idea in general?

Yeah I was totally in the "just do it in the bag" camp for years, thought it was fine. Then the exact same thing happened to me with a beef stew pouch on a cold morning. Hot water everywhere, breakfast gone. I looked it up later and those seams really aren't made for the heat and pressure, they're just for storage. Now I always use my little camping bowl, it's a pain to clean but way less of a pain than a pot full of soggy food and an empty bag.

Honestly this is just like when a shortcut ends up taking way longer. Trying to save a minute washing a bowl can cost you a whole meal and a big cleanup. It's a solid reminder that packaging usually has one job, and heating isn't it.
