Bought a $9 tarp from Harbor Freight for a rainy weekend at Mount Rainier, stayed bone dry while my buddy's $80 tent floor soaked through
I grabbed the cheapest tarp I could find on a whim before a trip to Mount Rainier in October, mostly to throw over the picnic table. It poured for two straight days and I ended up sleeping under it on a slope after my buddy's fancy tent started letting water in through the floor. The cheap thing never leaked a drop while his $80 setup felt like a wet sponge by morning. Now I bring a tarp on every trip no matter what tent I'm using, and I hang it low and angled into the wind. What's your go to cheap backup gear that ended up outperforming the expensive stuff?
A $12 blue tarp from Walmart saved a camping trip in the Olympics for me a few years back. My tent was fine but my sleeping pad had a slow leak and the ground was soaked, so I laid the tarp down as a ground cloth and it kept me dry the whole weekend. The tarp is still going strong three seasons later while the pad is in a landfill somewhere. Now I always pack one in the bottom of my bag because it can be a ground cloth, a rain fly, or a wind break. Best money I have spent on gear honestly.
