Serious question, does anyone else think soaking old lens rings in lighter fluid is a mistake?
I keep seeing people say to dunk a stuck focus ring in lighter fluid and let it sit, and I think that is asking for trouble. Last month I had a Canon FD 50mm f1.4 come in from a guy in Portland who tried it, and the fluid had washed the grease into the aperture blades and dried them out so bad they would not snap back. I spent two hours cleaning that mess with a Q-tip and naphtha instead of just a 10 minute re-lube. What are you all using to free up a stiff helicoid without wrecking everything inside?
Pouring lighter fluid in without pulling the glass first is the real problem, since it carries old grease straight onto the blades. Skip the fluid and use a drop of naphtha on the helicoid threads only, then work the ring back and forth.
