Rebuilt 312 shutters this year and number 312 was a Nikon FM2 that humbled me
I keep a little tally in my notebook of every shutter I tear down and rebuild. Started it as a joke back in January. Hit 312 last Thursday on a Nikon FM2 a guy drove up from Toledo to drop off, and that number stopped me cold. Here is why it matters. Around number 250 I noticed my average rebuild time had dropped from 3 hours to about 70 minutes, but my comeback rate went up. I was getting fast and sloppy at the same time. That FM2 had a lazy second curtain and I almost shipped it without checking the curtain travel at 1/1000. Caught it on the last test roll, and the frame was dark on one edge. So the milestone was not really about the count, it was the wake up call that speed was costing me repairs. Now I run every body through the same 3 speeds twice no matter how good it looks. Anybody else keep a repair log and actually change how they work because of it?
