A retired tech in Tulsa showed me the pencil eraser trick for corroded battery contacts
I was stuck on a Canon AE-1 with dead contacts and this guy named Walt at a camera swap in Tulsa watched me scrub at them with a fiberglass pen for 20 minutes. He pulled a plain pink eraser out of his shirt pocket and said the grit in most pens just polishes the corrosion instead of lifting it, then showed me how to work the eraser in small circles and finish with a little alcohol on a swab. Took me 4 minutes to get that body firing again and I have kept an eraser in my bench drawer ever since. Anyone else got a low tech trick like that for stuff the fancy tools just make worse?
Learned that same lesson with a crusty old Marantz receiver, spent an hour with contact cleaner and Q-tips getting nowhere. A buddy who fixes jukeboxes told me to just use a pencil eraser on the RCA jacks and the scratchy channel cleared right up. Sometimes the simple stuff beats the fancy tools.
