Used to run my tone and probe one jack at a time until a guy in Tulsa showed me his trick
When I started out I would clip the toner on at the head end and then walk every room hunting for the warble, which ate up half my day on a 12 drop house. A guy named Dale I worked a job with in Tulsa two summers back watched me do it and just shook his head, then pulled the whole bundle of 12 runs off the spool. He toned each one out at the box, wrote the room on a piece of blue tape, and stuck it on the cable before I ever picked up my probe. Now I label all 12 in about 15 minutes before I touch a single wall plate, and the probe only comes out to confirm. Anyone else do their labeling up front like that or am I late to something everybody already knew?

Did Dale also have you tone them at the box with the far end unterminated? That part matters more than the labeling, because if the far end is already punched down you get weird bleed between pairs and the labels end up wrong half the time. Label up front is the right move, just keep the far end open until the tone is confirmed.
