PSA: I zip tied my cables for 6 months before realizing the clips were melting
Last week I was cleaning behind my desk in my apartment in Austin and noticed the black zip ties on my monitor cables were kinda fused to the plastic. Turns out I was pulling them so tight that the heat from my PC and the tight grip was basically cooking the insulation, and I never thought about it once. Swapped to velcro straps from the dollar store and my cables actually breathe now.
Has anyone else had zip ties mess up their cable jackets like this, or did I just get a bad batch?

Six months is way longer than I would've guessed for that to happen, so you're not alone there. I did the same thing with the cables on my old build and the zip ties left these flat spots on the outer jacket, almost like the plastic got soft and took the shape of the tie. It wasn't melting exactly but it was clearly not happy, and the cables felt sticky when I finally cut them off. Heat plus pressure is a bad combo back there, especially if your PC exhausts right onto the cable bundle. Velcro was the move, good call.
