Heard a guy at the lumber yard talking about his first dovetails

I was picking up some maple in Tacoma yesterday and this older guy was telling his buddy about teaching his grandson to cut dovetails. He said the kid got it right on his third try after they switched from pine to poplar. I mean, I've been doing this for a while, but it made me remember how good it felt when a joint finally clicked. Maybe it's just me, but I think we forget that feeling after a few hundred cabinets. What was the first thing you made that actually felt solid?

Wait, THIRD try? That kid's a natural! I remember my first dovetails took like twenty tries and a whole lot of bad words. Pine is so soft it just tears out, switching to poplar was smart. That feeling when the joint finally fits tight is unbeatable. My first solid thing was a little oak box that actually held together. Makes you want to build everything after that.

No way, only twenty tries for your first dovetails? That's crazy lucky, @hernandez.ben. My first ones were a total disaster for way longer than that, I almost gave up. I had this pile of chewed up pine scraps that looked like a beaver got to them. That poplar tip is a lifesaver, it really does make a huge difference when you're learning. Getting that first tight fit is such a rush, it makes all the frustration worth it.
