Home inspector missed a cracked heat exchanger on my first offer

I put an offer on a 1970s ranch in Evanston last month and hired a highly rated inspector. He gave me the all clear on the furnace, just said it was old. Two weeks after closing I smelled something weird when the heat kicked on and called an HVAC guy. Turns out the heat exchanger had a crack you could see from 3 feet away with a flashlight. Cost me $4,200 to replace the whole unit. Has anyone else had an inspector completely miss something that obvious?

Did you check if that inspector even carries E&O insurance? Because if he's rated that high and missed something that blatant, that's a straight up negligence case waiting to happen. I'd be asking for my money back plus the cost of that HVAC replacement, not just posting about it online. What did the HVAC guy say when you showed him the inspection report where it says "all clear"?

Bet that inspector was using the same flashlight you find at the bottom of a junk drawer that barely lights up your own hand. Guess his "highly rated" title came from friends and family.
