Just realized the guy at the airport gate had a fix for my fried power bank
Flying out of Denver last week, my power bank started smoking after I plugged it into one of those seat USB ports. A guy next to me pulled out a tiny multimeter and tested the port, said it was pushing 12 volts instead of 5. He told me to always check the port voltage before plugging in anything expensive, and showed me how in like 30 seconds. Has anyone else run into airport or plane ports that just crank out too much juice?

Whats the deal with those plane ports anyway? I had almost the exact same thing happen on a flight to Phoenix, my old anker bank got crazy hot and stopped working right. The flight attendant told me they can't do anything about the ports and to just not use them. Now I carry one of those little USB voltage testers that cost like 8 bucks and check every port I see, including at hotels and coffee shops. Saved my phone from a bad one at a gate in Atlanta last month that was pushing almost 9 volts.
