Update: my $40 sink fix turned into a 3 hour flood and a hole in the ceiling
So last Saturday I noticed the kitchen sink draining slow, and instead of just grabbing a plunger like a normal person, I watched a video that said to snake it with a $40 auger from the hardware store. I got the cable about 6 feet in when the whole trap assembly pulled loose under the cabinet, and water started spraying everywhere. I panicked and yanked the auger out, which somehow made it worse, and by the time I found the shutoff valve the cabinet was soaked and water was dripping through the dining room ceiling. My wife came home to me standing in 2 inches of water with a bucket and a Shop-Vac, and we spent the rest of the night mopping. The kicker is the drain still backs up now, so I basically paid $40 and a Saturday to make my sink worse. Next time I'm just calling a real plumber before I touch anything. Has anyone else had a snake job go sideways like this, and did you end up just replacing the whole trap?
